Antiviral effect of the synthetic nucleotide Virazole (1-β-D-ribofurasonyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-3-carboxamide) on the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), bean yellow mosaic virus, Piracicaban isolate (VMAF-P) and cowpea mosaic virus
Abstract in English
The present work was carried out to verify the antiviral action of the synthetic nucleotide Virazole (1-β-D-ribofurasonyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-3-carboxamide), using different beans’ cultivar (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) that react to virus inoculation forming local lesions. The inoculation were made with the following viruses: Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) obtained from juice of infected leaves and purified preparations; Bean yellow mosaic virus, Piracicaban isolate (VMAF-P) and Cowpea mosaic virus. The objectives of the trials were to determine: (a) the best concentration of the viricide; (b) the viricide’s effect on different concentrations of virus; (c) the best time for application of the viricide; (d) the influence of the site of the application of the viricide on the virus. The viricide’s effect was evaluated by counting the number of local lesion produced and the size of them. The results obtained may indicate that the product has antiviral action, as in most cases it reduced local lesions numbers and the size of them. However, it was not possible to show the existence of a total control of infection caused by plant virus. The Virazole showed a preventive effect of infection by TMV and VMAF-P virus. The effect was not influenced by the site of application. The product was more efficient when applied in a greater leave’s area. The Virazole, in concentrations above 0.25mg/ml produced phytotoxic effect to bean plant. The characteristic symptoms were yellowing of apical leaves, which disappeared 3 to 5 days after. That effect varied in intensity according to the bean’s cultivar plant used. Rates equal or greater than 1.0 mg/ml affect the growth of bean plants.
