PALMEIRAS

Abstract in English
Among the species of palms most frequently used for landscaping purposes in the city of São Paulo, the following ones were studied in their external morphological, ornamental, and phenological characteristics: Chrysalidocarpus lutescens H. Wendland, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana Wendland et Drude, Rhapis excelsa (Thunberg) Henry ex Rehder, Phoenix canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud., Phoenix roebelenii Obrien, Roystonea oleracea (Jacquin) O. F. Cook., Roystonea regia (H.B.K.) O.F. Coo., Livistona chinensis (N.J. Jacquin) R. Brown, Collinia elegans Lilbm, Sabal palmetto (Walter) Lodd. ex Schultz e Sabal minor Pers. Data analysed involved structures from stipe to fruit, totaling 24 data per plant. Wich the data above obtained, arithmetic mean, mean standard deviation, confiance interval, and variation coeficient were calculated. The species were also described in regard to their ornamental aspect, and illustrated through original photographs and line drawings as to show, besides the general plant aspect, details peculiar to each species. In spite of having not studied the flower internal morphology, it is very much probable that the set of parameters presently adopted - including qualitative and quantitative data - will help both the characterization and the identification of the species in the field
