Phenotypic and agronomic characterization of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.)
Abstract in English
Three field experiments were carried out during growing season of 1984~85 at "Centro Experimental de Campinas, Instituto Agronômico", Campinas, SP, to study phenological and agronomical characteristics of 110 pigeon pea genotypes which presented large variability and predominance of certain traits. Green and dry matter production was evaluated as a function of genotype, time of cutting and height of the cut. With the exception of L 06/ESALQ line all the others were considered as late genotypes, as it took more than 200 days for the first harvest of mature seeds. Introductions of Argentina, Colômbia, Costa Rica, India and Porto Rico differed from kaki and fava-larga cultivars, kaki lines and ESALQ pigeon pea lines in relation to flower standard colour, immature pods colour; seed coat colour, with indeterminated growth habit, pigmented green stem, reduced leaves, scattered inflorescence and lower values of length, width, diameter and weight of mature pods, smaller seeds and green and dry matter yields. Among the tested genotypes seed varied from 1.10 to 2.39 t/ha and highest green yie1ds and dry matter yie1ds were obtained at maturity of the first pods. Soil covering was slow at ear1y stages of pigeon pea p1ant development, but increased stead1y thereafter with comp1ete covering just before f1owering. A tendency of positive association among green and dry matter and seed yie1ds with soi1 covering was observed, being outstanding for these traits, 1ines L 01 p L 13 and L 28 from ESALQ and cu1tivar kaki.
