Effect of intercropping cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), using single and double rows, on yield
Abstract in English
The effect of intercropping cotton with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. and Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) was studied using different spacial arrangements. The experiment was carried out Arapiraca, Alagoas, Brazil. The soil is a "Latossol Vermelho Amarelo" (Brazilian classification) of medium texture. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial arrangement type 3 x 3 and 4 replications. The treatments were a combination of 3 planting for cotton (Single rows 1 m apart and double rows spaced 0,5 m within and 1.5 or 2.0 m between double rows), and 3 cropping systems (single cropping and intercropped with Phaseolus or Vigna), given a total of 9 treatments. The varieties used were BR-l (cotton), IPA-l (Phaseo1us) and VITA-3 (Vigna). Intercropping did not affect cotton yie1d, however p1anting spacing, sing1e rows and doub1e rows 0.5 x 1.5 m, increased cotton yie1d as compared to doub1e rows 0.5 x 2,0 m. Beans yie1d (Phaseolus and Vigna) under intercropping were cower than under sing1e cropping.
