Evaluation of the cultural practices of bud-pruning and pruning on different tutoring systems of the tomato crop (Lycopersicon esculentum MiII.)
Abstract in English
In an experiment field at the Sitio São Pedro, in the country of Rafard/SP, in 1990, the effect of bud-pruning and pruning was evaluated on two tutoring systems-crossed-fence and vertical tutoring. The yield analysis, under the standard of the number of fruit produced, showed that in the treatments with pruning there was a reduction in this standard when compared to a similar treatment without pruning. Statistically, there was no significant difference for the number of fruit in the crossed-fence system due to whether or not the pruning was carried out. However, in the average weight of the fruit, which resulted in a better commercial classification (2A). In the vertical tutoring system, the number of fruit produced showed a statistically significant difference at 1% of probability. When fruit production is evaluated by percentage, the vertical tutoring system presents a higher percentage of 2A class fruit than the crossed-fence system. When the yield is evaluated by weight (kg), the crossed-fence system was statistically superior to the vertical tutoring system. The association of bud-pruning with pruning showed that always when both systems were used, the percentage of 2A class fruit was greather than that presented by treatments where only one of the systems was used, for both of the tutoring systems. The earlyes in tomato production, which were bud-pruned or pruned, was not proven in this paper. The vertical tutoring system, when compared under equal conditions of bud-pruning and pruning with the crossed-fence system, presented a lower poduction cost per hectare. The subitem tutoring represented 78,4% more in the quantity of manpower used in the vertical tutoring system when compared to the crossed-fence system, respectively 38,0 and 21,3 dh. When compared jointly the quantity of manpower used for the tutoring, tying, pruning, bud-pruning and thinning, the vertical tutoring system used from 48,1 to 59,6% of the manpower used in the crossed-fence system
