Herbicides performance in the maize crop (Zea mays L.)
Resumé en anglais
With the purpose to evaluate, comparatively, the effect of the weed control in maize using herbicides applied in pre-emergence and post-emergence, a field experiment was carried out at the experimental area of the Agricultural Department of the University of São Paulo between February 23rd to July 25th 2000, where the following basic hypothesis were assumed: (i) the cost of all intervention (including weed control) must be smaller than the expectation of gross income loss due to weed competition; (ii) the inter-specific competition (between weeds and maize plants) for water, nutrients and Iight reduces crop yield; (iii) the inter-specific competition starts when the environment becomes critical to attempt the crop potential demand; (iv) there is a specific period where the economical intervention must be executed; and (v) there are situations where the herbicide toxicity could mainly occur as a function of the application period (phenological stage), genetic material, active ingredient and weather. The results allowed the following conclusions: (i) ali herbicides treatments for weed control in maize resulted in better growth and yield than the control treatment; (ii) the herbicides treatments in pre-emergence did not differ from each other and resulted in higher yield when compared with the post-emergence treatments; (iii) the post-emergence herbicides treatments did not differ from each other; (iv) the treatment 9 (Alachlor + Atrazine, 6 L/ha), among all herbicide treatments in pre-emergence, presented the smallest yield; (v) the treatments 17 (Atrazine + Metolachlor, 6 L/ha), 19 (Dimethenamid + Atrazine, 1,25 + 2,5 L/ha) and 15 (Atrazine + Dimethenamid-p, 3,5 L/ha), among all herbicide treatments in post-emergence, presented the higher yield; (vi) the treatment 18 (Alachlor + Atrazine, 6 L/ha), among all herbicide treatments in post-emergence, presented the smallest yield; and (vii) the tested herbicides, when applied in pre-emergence, did not present satisfatory controll for Commelina benghalensis L.
