Behaviour of indeterminated growth tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), in protected environment
Abstract in English
Tomato high yields in protected environment are obtained through an adequate management. Plant growth, marketable yield, classified yield and quality of four cultivars of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., hybrid Andréa, Débora Max, Carmen and Diana) were evaluated at two plant spacings (30 and 45 cm, corresponding to 39,216 and 26,144 plants ha-1) with different number of branches by plant (one and two branches), cultivated in polyethylene bags, containing 15 L of substrate. The experimental design was randomized blocks in factorial design of 4x2x2, with four replications. Only four fruits were left by raceme and the plants pruned above the sixth raceme. Plant and first raceme height were depend on the management; Andréa and Carmen plants were more vigorous and the fruits were harvested more lately than the cultivars Débora Max and Diana. The longest internodes length and distance among racemes were obtained in the 30 cm spacing among plants. Plant growth was not influenced by the number of branches by plant. Larger total and per day marketable yields, were obtained in the highest density and in the plants with two branches; however, the effect of number branches depend on the cultivar. The highest fruit weight were obtained in the lowest density and in the plants with a branch. In the lowest density and in the plants with a branch was obtained larger average fruit weight and better classified production. There was not effect of cultivars the total titrable acidity (ATT), pH and Vitamin C. Andréa presented larger quality, differing of the others as for the total soluble solids (SST) and ratio SST/ATT. In Débora Max, the SST increased with decrease of plant densities. The plants with a branch presented larger ration SST/ATT and firmness, and smaller ATT, and for Carmen, the plants with a branch had larger ratio SST/ATT.
