Cooling and quality of corn seeds stored in piles in different packages
Abstract in English
The present work was carried out in order to verify the effects of the storage environment cooling on the physiological quality of piled corn seeds in two different packages. Seed of AG-303 cultivar were size rated, treated, packed in kraft paper bags and gunny sacks and kept in conventional and mobil cooler equipped warehouses for 6 months. The seed bags were arranged in four blocks of piles concerning the replications; as the piles were built the packages of the lot used for the study were distributed in pre-stablished spots. The temperatures at the pile sampling spots and in the warehouse environment were recorded during storage. Tests for sanitary and physiological quality evaluation were conducted when the piles were formed and by the end of the storage period. From the data analysis and the results interpretation one concludes that: - The warehouse environment cooling provides better preservation of the physiological quality of corn seeds. The intensity of that effect may be dependent on the package used. – The seeds are affected as to the physiological quality, according to their position within the pile; those situated in the central parts of piles are more likely to deteriorate than the others. – The calory equilibrium between the seeds and the environment is more slowly attained at the base and central parts of piles than in other parts.
