Soilless media for cultivation of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana cv. Singapur, Crassulaceae

Abstract in English
Different soilles media utilization for Kalanchoe blossfeldiana cv. Singapur, Crassulaceae cultivation studied in an experiment set up in 1991 at the Section of Ornamental Plants, Institute of Botany which belongs to the Environment Secretary of São Paulo State, at São Paulo City, in Brazil. Ten different mixtures were used as soilles media: horticultural vermiculite and Oliver filter cake (a waste of sugar cane factory) at 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 ratio by volume; horticultural vermiculite and roasted rice hulls at 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 ratio by volume; horticultural vermiculite and peat at 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 ratio by volume and vermiculite and pine bark, a commercial formulation. Also different ways of nitrogen supply were simultaneously studied, using water solution of urea applied daily, each two days, three days or four days. Dolomitic limestone at 3 kg/m3 of the mixtures and a 0-2, 5-6 fertilizer salt soluble formula at 4,5 kg/m3 were also applied 90 days before planting. The experimental designe used was randomized one and the statistical analysis being done at a 10 x 4 factorial scheme (10 growth media and 4 ways of nitrogen supply). The parameters used for analysis were: number of leaves, number of shoots, plant length and dry matter weight. The most positive results were showed by the mixtures with Oliver filter cake, roasted rice hulls and peat, in this order. Also in each mixture the best results were achieved in those containing high percentage of horticulture vermiculite. The mixture vermiculite and pine bark showed the worst results in the most parameters. The plants cultivated in this mixture also showed a very poor aspect if compared with plants of other mixtures; the color was a very dark green and the smallest size. The nitrogen supply showed significance only for the parameter number of leaves being the best the application at each four days of interval.
