Agronomical characterization of the yellow passion-fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa Degener)

Abstract in English
This research was carried out in the IAC Agricultural Experiment Station at Monte Alegre do Sul, SP, Brazil, from 1993 to 1997. lt purposes to search for one acceptable yellow passion-fruit cultivar, which were, simultaneously, highly productive and fruit quality uniformity. lt was studied the performance of nineteen progenies of yellow passion-fruit, picked up both from commercial orchards and germoplasm banks. Eight best combinations of intra- varieties hybrids were evaluated, by means of an experimental design of randomized blocks. The progenies were placed in tine of nine plants, and the hybrids, in random blocks, with five repplications and three plants per plot. AII these progenies and crossings were analyzed, in terms of vegetative growth, flowers types, flowering and fruiting, mutual compatibility, productivity, and fruit quality, including fruit weight, fruit size, pulp, pulp colar, seeds/fruit ratio, total soluble solids (TSS), and commercial paterns. Those progenies that presented the best association among these factors, overcoming the commercial requirements, were recombined. The best compatible crossings produced eight hybrids, which competed among themselves, in arder to identify the more indicated fruit market requirements. The best results were obtained with IAC-5, 6, 7 and 8, which presented more effective improvements in all characteristics considered. These hybrids were more productive and have better fruit quality than current commercial product. They, also, presented high mutuai compatibility, curved-threads flowers above 93%, estimated yield of 27 to 57 ton/ha, oval and compacts fruits, weight from 170 to 237 g, TSS between 15 and 16 °Brix, 51% for pulp yield and more than 370 seeds per fruit. Seventy percent of fruits were classified in one of the two highest classes for the market, i.e., more than 8,5 cm long and 7, 1 cm wide. To fresh fruit market, where the fruit quality is more important than productivity, IAC-5, IAC-7 and IAC-8 were best. ln addition, both IAC-5 and IAC-7 hybríds presented pulp on orange-intensive calor, more attractiveness and better flavor. Less exigent market, where fruit quality is not required for its classification, the best performance was obtained with IAC-1, IAC-3 and IAC-5, which reached up from 55 to 65 ton/ha
