Objetivando estudar a relação existente entre o desempenho das sementes de milho e a disponibilidade hídrica, o presente trabalho foi desenvolvido empregando substratos, com potenciais hídricos variáveis, em estudos de laboratório e de campo. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes de 60 lotes do cultivar AG 303, das safras agrícolas 1989/90, 1990/91 e 1991/92, foi avaliada, em laboratório, através dos testes padrão de germinação, de frio, de condutividade elétrica e de germinação sob estresse hídrico de -3 atm. Foi conduzido, ainda em laboratório, teste de comprimento de plântulas sob potenciais hídricos de 0, -3, -6 e -9 atm. No campo, as sementes foram expostas à potenciais hídricos no solo de -0,1, -0,5, -15 e inferior a -15 atm para a avaliação da porcentagem de emergência de plântulas. A reunião das informações coletadas permitiu as seguintes conclusões: - A deficiência hídrica retarda o desenvolvimento das plântulas durante a germinação das sementes de milho. Sementes, com vigor mais elevado, apresentam desempenho superior nessa condição. - O potencial hídrico de -0,5 atm, no solo, possibilita emergência superior às sementes de milho. Os testes, de frio e de germinação sob estresse hídrico de -3 atm, podem ser usados para estimar o desempenho das sementes de milho em situações desfavoráveis de disponibilidade hídrica no solo.

An investigation was carried out under laboratory and field conditions in order to study the relationship between corn seeds performance and water availability. Physiological quality of seeds from 60 lots, cultivar AG 303, yields of 1989/90, 1990/91 and 1991/92, used in the investigation, were evaluated in laboratory using the following tests: standard germination, cold, electrical conductivity and germination with hydric stress of -3 atm. A seedling length test was also carried out in laboratory. The seeds were subject to four hydric potentials: 0, -3, -6 and -9 atm. Under field conditions the seed lots were exposed to four hydric potentials: -0.1, -0.5, -15 and less than -15 atm, in order to evaluate the field emergence. The analysis of The results allowed the following conclusions: The water deficit delays the seedling development during germination. Corn seeds, with high vigor, presented higher performance under this condition. -The hydric potential of -0,5 atm in soil allows a higher corn seeds emergence. - The cold test and the germination test, with hydric stress of -3 atm, can be used to estimate the behavior oi seed lots under adverse conditions oi water availability in the soil.
