Effects of the application of insecticides and fungicides and its associations with the quality of corn (<i>Zea mays</i> L.) seeds
Abstract in English
In order to offer new options of insecticides which can provide a wide protection to the seeds and represent few risks for human health, the present work was accomplished with the objective to verify the effects and the residual power of the insecticides Deltamethrin and Avermectin, comparatively to DDT, for the protection of corn seeds, and also the action of the fungicides Terracoat and Captan applied to the seeds isolately or in the association with the three insecticides, during a twelve months? storage period. The corn seeds, cultivar Ag 162, after receiving the chemical treatments, were packed up and stored under environmental conditions in the Seed Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture of Escola Superior de Agricultura ?Luiz de Queiroz?, University of São Paulo. The seed quality was evaluated according to germination and vigor in five different epochs (every three months). The results of the tests led to the following conclusions: - the seeds not treated with the insecticides, and the treatments DDT 20g of DDT/100kg of seeds (after nine months? storage) and DDT 40g of DDT/100kg of seeds (after twelve months? storage) suffered high infestation by storage insects; - the insecticides Deltamethrin and Avermectin, in both dosages used, and in the associations with the fungicides Terracoat and Captan revealed to be efficient in the protection of corn seeds during the twelve months? storage period; - the results obtained with Deltamethrin and Avermectin were similar to the mixture of the fungicide Captan with the insecticides DDT + Malathion + Diazinon (Treatment 21) and the DDT associated to the fungicides Terracoat and Captan; - the treatment in which the fungicide Captan was present offered a protection for a longer period against microorganisms.
