Influence of stem cutting diameter and stem cutting position on the plant of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) on the emergence, development and yield of three cassava cultivars
Abstract in English
This research deals with the study of viability of using stem cuttings with three different diameters related to three different positions of the cutting on the cassava plant (Manihot esculenta Crantz), and then evaluating the effects of such cuttings on the emergence, development and yield of three cassava cultivars. The experiment was set in an area of the Departament of Agriculture and Horticulture at the Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz", University of São Paulo, in Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The field research was carried out ruding two successive years, from September 23, 1980 to July 23, 1981, and from September 1st, 1981 to July 20, 1982, dates corresponding to the planting and harvesting times of the first and the second years, respectively. The mature and healthy cuttings were obtained from 12-month old plants of the cultivars 'Mantiqueira', 'Jaçanã' and 'Pirassununga'. These cutting (20 cm long) were divided into three diameter size classes: 2.6 ± 2 cm; 2.0 ± .2; and 1.4 ± .2 cm, representing stem cuttings taken from the main stem, the primary and the secondary ramifications of the mother plants, respectively. The experimental design was a 3 x 3 factorial in randomized blocks. Each year of experiment consisted of nine treatments (three cultivars and three cutting diameters) in five blocks. The size of the plot was 5.0 m x 6.0 m, with 30 plants and the plant spacing was 1 m x 1 m. Only 12 central plants of each plot were used for the statistical analysis. The parameters studied were: speed and percentage of emergence, plant height, number of roots per plant, root weight, root yield per hectare, stem yield per hectare, and harvesting index. The results obtained allowed one to draw the following conclusions: 1. The plant vigour is significantly shown in the stage of plant emergence and partially in the growth stage, being the duration of these effects a function of temperature and rainfall conditions; 2. Neither stem cutting diameter nor stem cutting position influenced the root production per area; 3. The three cultivars used in the experiment showed a high root yield, and the cultivar Mantiqueira was the most productive and the one with the best harvesting index.
