Effects of method of delinting on germination and vigor of cotton seeds (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
Abstract in English
Present work was carried out with the aim of verifying the effects of delinting methods on germination and vigor of cotton seeds of IAC 13-1 variety under laboratory conditions. Following rnethods of delinting were compareci: mechanical, flame. wet chernical (H2SO4) and dry chernical (Anhydrous HCl) rnethods. Germination and vigor were used to evaluate the effect of treatrnents (vigor index and accelerated aging). The pH and weight of hectoliter of the treated seeds, by different methods, were also observed which helped in the interpretation of data obtained. The results of germination and vigor test indicated that chemical methods were superior in relation to other treetments when evaluated in terms of percentage germination and vigor index. Aging tests demonstrated that wet chemical and dry chemical method without neutralization are the rnost harrnful for seed storage. When seeds were treated by chernical methods resulted in higher acidity of the seeds. Observations made on the different phases of the dry chemical method showed the importance of neutralization to ensure germination and vigor of seeds. To guarantee better germination and vigor, it was found to be necessary to use fungicida application in the case of mechanical delinting.
