Effect of physiological maturation in the production of seeds and in the industrial output of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]
Abstract in English
This work reports an experiment conducted with the objective of studying the effect of physiological naturation in some characteristics of sorghum, cultivar BR 501. The sorghum was harvested weekly following flowering. A total of 11 harvests were done and data was collected on the following: a) agronomic characteristics - presence of dry leaves, plant height, green weight yield, production of deleafed stalks and seed production; b) technological characteristics - extraction of stalk juice, Brix, total sugars reductive sugars, apparent sucrose (pol), apparent purity, stalk fiber and ashes content in the juice; c) seed analysis - moisture content, weight of dry matter, weight of 1,000 seeds, occurrence of black layer in the hilum, germination and vigor. The analysis of results led to the following conclusions: Date of harvesting had no effect on plant height and on the production of green mass and deleafed stalks; but it affected seed production . As rnaturation progressed juice% and reductive sugars showed a tendency to decrease; Brix, total sugars, apparent sucrose% (pol) and apparent purity increased more noticeably after- ward 33 days after flowering whereas ash content on the juice did not vary. The seed black layer was considered a good characteristic to identify seed physiological maturity. Germination velocity I accelerated ag;ing and ,amrronium chloride test were found to be adequate to evaluate seed vigor and correlated well with gerrnination, sarne was not observed for the first count germination test. Stalk physiological maturation occurred following seed physiological maturation.
