Effects of foliar fungicide applications on dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed quality
Abstract in English
Seed quality is one of the most important yield factors as for as dry bean (P. vulgaris L.) crops, mainly in tropical conditions. There are just a few studies in the lite rature dealing with the relation between the foliar fungicides applications and seed quality. The present study was conducted at two locations, at the Experimental and Production Center of Florestal, of the Fundação Instituto Agronômico do Paraná (IAPAR)., in Teixeira Soares city, Paranã State, and at the Seed Laboratory of the Agriculture and Horticulture Department of the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ), University of São Paulo, Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brasil. Seeds from untreated plant or plant treated du- ring the growth phase, immediatly before and immediatly after flowering, with Fentin, Tin triphenil acetate, Chlorotalonil alone and Chlorotalonil in combination to Metil tiophanate were studied. The effects of fungicides applications were evaluated in the antracnosis control, pods per plant, seeds per pod and yield. The seeds were evaluated by volumetric weight, physical purity, weight per 1.000 seeds and number of spotted seeds and wrinkled seeds. Germination, emergence and the incidence of microorganisms on/in the seeds (blotter test), were carried out during one year at two month intervals. The results indicated that the fungicide applications increased yield and seed quality. The reduction in the disease incidence increased the volumetric weight, the weight per 1.000 seeds, germination, vigor, and health of seeds. Additionally, a low level of spotted seeds and wrinkled seeds was observed. It was verified that the occurrence of some pa- thogenic fungus decreased with the time when seeds were stored under normal environmental conditions
