Behaviour of eight commercial avocado varieties (Persea americana Miller) at limeira region, State of São Paulo, Brazil
Abstract in English
An experiment with eight avocado varieties was carried out i n 1969 at Limeira, a n Experimental Station of Instituto Agronômico, in order to study the plant growth, yield and fruit average weight. The ecological con d itions of experiment place are hot climate with dry winter of the type Cwa. (Kuppen) and the soil Red dark-ortho Latosol. The eight varieties studied were: Pollock, Simmonds, Herculano, Collinson, Quintal, Linda, Prince and Wagner. The seedl ings of Waldin variety was used as rootstock. The experiment was designed as Randomized B lock, with four replications and two plants per plot. The expeririment was fertilized and well conducted. No irrigation was used. The plant growth, i.e., plant height and scion diameter was measured since 1971 until 1976. The yield and fruit average weight was considered since 1974 until 1981, except 1976. The West lndian varieties and the West lndian x Guatemalan hybrids showed higher growth than Guatemalan race. The highest and s hortest growth was due to the Herculano and Prince variety. The West lndian x Guatemalan hybrids yield were superior to the Guatemalan and West lndian varieties. The highest and smallest yield was due to the Herculano and Prince varieties respectively. The eight varieties studied were different in relation to the fruit average weight. The effect of the the year on the fruit average weight was noted in the Herculano, Collinson, Linda, Prince and Wagner varieties, and it is also depended, on the yield. ln general, highest yield corresponded smallest fruit average weight.
