Title in English
Dormancy overcoming in Panicum maximum Jacq. seeds: selection of methods for industrial scale use
Abstract in English
The main goal of this research was to identify those treatments that besides being capable of overcoming dormancy in Panicum maximum seeds were physiologically favorable and liable to industrial scale use. Four seed lots were submitted to H2SO4 (98%, 36N) immersion for 5 minutes, germination substratum moistened with KNO3 (0.2% ), and thermal treatments at 40, 55, 70, and 85°C for exposure periods of 5, 10, and 15 h in air circulating oven. Treated seeds were evaluated by means of the standard germination test and concluded by the tetrazolium test in remaining seeds, first germination count, emerging seedlings, emergence speed, and aerial part growth along 6 months of storage. Both chemical (KNO3 and H2 SO4) and thermal (40, 55, 70, and 85°C for 5, 10 e 15 h) treatments were ascertained to be efficient in overcoming dormancy which is not necessarily reverted into a raise in the physiological performance. The use of temperatures at 40 and 55°C - feasible at industrial scale - and KNO3, except for the particularities of lot response, are dormancy overcoming techniques able to promote physiological meaning gains for the seeds.
