Differential allocation of resources in maize (Zea mays L.) populations
Resumen en inglés
The objective of the present work was the study of the differential distribution of resources among vegetative and reproductive organs of the maize plant in the local variety ESALQ PBI and in segragation populations resulting from the cross between ESALQ-PBI and the Brazilian races named CRAVO and ENTRELAÇADO. Ninety eight ha1f-sib families from each population were evaluated in 1983/84 at Piracicaba (SP) , in two 7x7 triple lattice experiments. Five competitiveplants from each plot were used to measure the following traits: dry weight of stalk and leaves (PMSCF), tassel dry weight (PMSPE), cob dry weight (PMSSA), husk dry weight (PMSPA), seed dry weight (PMSSE), Harvest Index, total dry weight, except root system (PMSTT) i and their respective indices: PMSCF/PMSTT, PMSPE/PMSTT, PMSSA/PMSTT, PMSPA/PMSTT, PMSSE/PMSTTi among them, the index ((PMSPE + PMSPA + PMSSA ++ PMSSE)/PMSTT), called Reproductive Effot, was included. Data on phenology of the maize plant were included in order to get some additional information on population fitness, thus, the number of days to tassel and the numberof leaves above and below the ear, were taken for this purpose. The distribution of family means(histograms) for the several traits and indices showed to be differentiated among populations respective to the direction and leveI of skewness from the several traits and indices. The results lead to the conclusion that the local varietyESALQ PBl showed a more remarkable tendency to strategist Γ(PIANKA, 1970) than the others. On the other hand in the population ESALQ-PBl x ENTRELAÇADO the reproduvtive effort was less expressive than in the maize ENTRELAÇADO by the indians of the Amazon Basin; such a selection would not greatly emphasize seed production as in modern maize breed ing but rather had the objective to get seed supplies from a maize plant grown under natural conditions. Respective to days to flower the population ESALQ-PBI x ENTRELAÇADO showed to be the latest on and ESALQ-PBl x CRAVO the earliest. Such a differentiationwas due to the lateness and earliness of the respective parental races. The overall results showed the importanceof studies on the relative allocation of resources in the maize plant for breeding purposes. On the other hand, they are a contribution for the knowledge of the genetic structure of the segregation populations and their value for breeding purposes, when the aim of selection is the identification of superior progenies under different leveIs of envirronment disturbance and when the pIastic and genetic components of the reproductive effort must be better known.
