Representativity of plots with reduce size for evaluation of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) agronomic characters
Abstract in English
The usual type of experimental plot replications in soybean research is composed or four lines, five meters long. In experiments with many treatments, this plot type may become unsuitable because of the great size and the great amount of seeds required. The experiments reported here done with the purpose of determining whether alternate plot types in row and hill, could be substituted for the usual one. The experiments were performed on the 1984/85 and 1985/86 growing seasons, at the experimental fields of EMBRAPA-UEPAE of Dourados (MS) and of ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba (SP). Eighteen genotypes of the early, medium and late maturation groups were used. The number of days to the flowering stage and to maturity were the same, regardless of the plot types. The plant and first pod heights, the number of nodes on the primary stem and the one hundred seed weight, revealed small variations with the plot types, showing that any one could be used for determining these characters. The hill plots and the one row plots were no efficient for determining the lodging susceptibility of the genotypes. There were differences among the plot types in the determinations with genotypes, maturation cycles and locations. Thus, short row and hill plot many be used for evaluating great amounts of genotypes, mainly to overcome limitations in seed supply, experimental field and time
