Intra-population recurrent selection in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)
Abstract in English
The objective of the present work was the study of an open-pollinated population of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) subdivided into two subpopulations (A-control and B-irradiated), by using the methodology of intra-population recurrent selection based on half-sib families. Three - hundred half-sib families of each. Subpopulation were evaluated in three simple lattice experiments at one location. The commercial hybrids Contisol and Conti-112 were used as checks. The following traits were studied: capitulum weight (PC), achene weight (PA), plant height (AP), capitulum height (AC), and capitulum diameter (DC). Several genetic parameters were estimated and comparisons were made between the subpopulations. The estimates of the additive genetic variance for PC and PA were 214. 40 and 94. 97 (g/pl) 2 in the subpopulation B, and 182. 99 and 70.71 (g/pl) 2 in the subpopulation A, respectively. For the other traits, the same tendency was observed, i.e., higher estimates for the subpopulation B, this showing that irradiation cause a slight increase in variability. The lower coefficients of heritability were for DC: 45.22 and 42.27% (progeny mean bases) in subpopulation A and B, respectively; the higher estimates were for AP: 67.62 and 63.81%, respectively. The index of variation (CVg/CVe) showed relatively high values for all traits, thus showing ample opportunity for selection in both subpopulations. The expected gain for achene weight was higher for the subpopulation B, but the improved population would show a similar yield because the higher mean of the unimproved A subpopulation. Additive and phenotypic correlation showed to be high and positive for combination of traits in both subpopulation. The higher additive correlation was showed by PC x PA, and indirect selection in capitulum weight to improve achene weight seems to be effective.
