Self-incompatibility in Capsicum pubescens Ruiz & Pavon

The self-incompatibility is a common phenomen in angiosperms. In Solanaceae the gametophic system controlled by multiple alleles is founded in economically important genus as Nicotiana, Lycopersicon, Solanum, Petunia and Capsicum. The induction of self-compatibility in self-incompatibility populations can be used for three different purposes: the production in homozigous condition of valuable combinations of recessive genes, the production of inbreed lines with superior combining ability and the maintenance of a high level of fertilization under unfavorable conditions to cross pollination. The present study aimed to classify the genotypes of Capsicum pubescens with respect to the self-incompatibility reaction and to overcome this reaction by means of bud pollination. The classification of the varieties was released according to the "index of self-incompatibility" (ZAPATA & ARROYO, 1978) and the pollen tube growth in the style tissue (MARTIN, 1959). The bud pollinations were made at one, two and three days before anthesis. According to the observations and experimental results, it was concluded that: - The C. pubescens varieties showed variation with respect to the self-incompatibili ty reaction, thus there were self-compatibles, partially self-incompatibles and self-incompatibles varieties; - In the self-incompatible and partially self-incompatible varieties there are a variable frequency of totally self-compatible individuals, probably as a consequence of mutations at locus S; - The pollen tube growth inhibition was observed at different levels of the style and possibly it taked place at the ovary tissue also; - Self-incompatibility was difficult to over-come by bud pollination and this is not of practical use for obtain selfed progenies in self-incompatible populations.
