Abstract in English
The present study was carried out at five Latin-American locations (1. INIAP/Ecuador; 2. CIAT/Colombia; 3. ESALQ-USP/Brazil; 4. CIMMYT/México; 5. EMBRAPA/Brazil) and the objective was to evaluate the genetic potential of lines at different inbreeding leveIs, in single crosses from two maize populations, POZA RICA 8024 and PICHILINGUE 7928. Twenty eight lines from each population, comprising seven lines from each generation of inbreeding (S1, S2, S3 e S4), were crossed according to the partial diallel scheme (factorial) thus resulting four sets of 7 x 7 crosses. The 49 single crosses of each diallel set (C1, C2, C3 e C4) were evaluated in completely randomized block experiments where the diallel sets were grouped within replications following the split-plot arrangement. The following traits were evaluated: total ear weight (PT), grain weight (PG), plant height (AP), ear height (AE) and days to female fIowering (FF). In the analyses of variance, significant differences were detected for the variation among single crosses for all traits in all experiments at all locations. Estimates were obtained for the genetic variance among hybrids (ôG2), phenotypic variance (ôF2) and for the broad sense coefficient of heretability at hybrid mean leveI (h2 ). The analyses of variance of the diallel tables for yield traits showed a high significance for the effects of general combining ability (gi and gj) for Iines of both populations, thus indicating the importance of the additive genetic variance for those traits. On the other hand, the specific combining ability effects showed no significance, although they have had expressive contribution in the mean of some specific hybrids. For each diallel set and in each location, the most promising single crosses for yield were identified. The best crosses showed yields of the order of 38, 45, 49, 41 and 28% relative to checks in locations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, respectively. On the other hand, the means of diallel sets did not show significant differences for each trait in the several locations. For the comparison among locations the higher average yield was observed in 5. EMBRAPA/Brazil, followed by 2. CIAT/Colombia. For FF the lower mean was for 1. INIAP/Ecuador while for AP and AE the lower means were in 4. CIMMYT/México. In 3. ESALQ-USP/Brazil the traits tassel branch number (NRP) and grain specific weight (PE) also were evaluated and showed high variabilities. In the several diallel sets and locations a positive and significant correlation was detected for combinations of traits: AP x AE, PT x PRO, PG x PRO, PT x AP, PT x AE, PG x AP, PG x AE, PT x AE/AP, PG x AE/AP. The overall results indicated that inbred lines from both populations show a good potential for the obtention of outstanding hybrids in the several inbreeding leveIs; in fact more than 50% of the evaluated single crosses showed to be higher yielding than checks.
