Abstract in English
The objective of this work was to evaluate cassava in the Germoplasm Collection BAGM, of EMBRAPA, trough multivariate methods for: selection of botanic and agronomic descriptors for germoplasm characterization; estimation of genetic diversity among accessions and classification in groups of genetic similarity. 280 accessions harvested in 1977 and 1978, without replications, were evaluated. Field plots used in the experiment had 24 plants grown in three rows with 1.0 x 1.0 m distance between plants. For evaluation, 4 plants/plot were used. Twenty-eight parameters related to roots and top part of the plant were evaluated. The Principal Components Analysis was utilized in order to discard descriptors and to estimate the degree of genetic diversity present in the BAGM. The 280 accessions were divided in nine groups (Cij) following classification based on the descriptors root weight (Pesrz) and starch concentration (Amid). Cluster Analysis for C33 group, which has the highest economical value, was carried out. Also, the relation of genetic similarity between C33 and the remaining groups were studied. The main conclusions are as follows: - The method of discarding variables allowed to reject 50% of the descriptors initially taken, resulting in a less complex analysis and interpretation of results without loss of information considered as relevant; - The dispersion of accessions based on the first principal components showed that a continuous and large genetic diversity was present in the BAGM here investigated; - Subdivision of the 280 accessions of cassava in groups according to their economical importance, showed to be a rational and objective strategy for studying the BAGM genetic diversity; - Regression of genetic distance values between Cij and C33 groups was linear with reference to the degree of importance given to those groups; - The high magnitude of genetic divergence present in the C33 group showed that the selection of the parental types within this outstanding group allows large possibilities for obtention of transgressive segregants; - Based on analysis of stability and genetic dispersion of accessions it could be observed that there was a high degree of variation among accessions in relation to genotype x environment interaction. Results also indicated that a larger number of evaluations of accessions necessary in different years and/or locations in order to establish a precise degree of genetic divergence present in the BAGM; - However, the genetic divergence of the Cij, groups in relation to the elite group C33, was not much affected by environmental variations due to years effects.
