Performance of sugarcane progenies (Saccharum spp) in two constrasting environments
Abstract in English
Progenies of seven biparental reciprocal crosses were studied in two contrasting environments: Araras-SP, considered favorable, and Uberlândia -MG, unfavorable. The crosses were chosen taking into account the necessity of having a genetic base as broad as possible without loss of good agronomic characteristics like cane production capacity, high sugar content and rusticity. Each seedling stool were subdivided in two during the bench stage, in order to have the same genotype planted in both locations. The characters studied were: number of canes (NC), weight of canes (PC) and field refratometric Brix (B). Analysis of variance indicated differences in the performance of progenies for the three characters, which fact points that the genetic variability can be enlarged and taken to advantage according to their identification and the order of priority established for each one and for each location. A very high and positive correlation was observed between NC and PC at Uberlândia. Progeny-location interaction for PC points out to the necessity of specific programs for each contrasting environment, or simultaneous selection in both locations. For the other characters, selection in one location will lead to favorable and similar results in the other. It was observed that B presents a higher stability than NC. The progeny of the cross SP70-1143 x RB72454 showed the best performance in both places. The low genetic variation observed, together with the general low performance of all progenies in marginal or “cerrado” soil, is an indication that breeding ought to be complemented with improvement of the environment, in order to have a sound a sound agricultural exploitation in those type of soils. Some of breeding strategy for that unfavorable environment are suggested.
