Expected progress in maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines via intra and interpopulational recurrent selection
Abstract in English
This work was carried out aiming to study the alterations caused by intra and interpopulation recurrent selection on inbred lines obtained from populations under selection. Several expressions were gotten through genetic covariance between relatives to estimate the expected genetic progress in inbred lines, via selection, on populations where they came from. Those expressions were obtained according to several intra and interpopulation recurrent selection schemes. Considering the intrapopulation selection, two components of the intrapopulation genetic variance in addition to the additive genetic variance (σ2A) participate of the expected progress in inbred lines from populations: component D1 that is the covariance of the average gene effects and the dominance effects of homozygous; and component D2 that is the variance concerned to homozygous dominance effects. The component D1 participates of the gain in inbred lines on the selection schemes with SO (half sib and full sib) progenies, and components D1 and D2 in selection schemes with endogamic progenies S1 and S2. The magnitude of the contribution of these parameters is function of the endogamic level of the selection unities and the improved ones, the population genic frequency and the degree of dominance of the character. D1 has negative contribution for p̄ ≃ 0,3, small contribution for p̄ ≃ 0,5 and positive contribution for p̄ ≃ 0,7 and D2 only contributes positively. Considering the interpopulation selection, two components contribute to the inbred lines progress: σA1A2and D112 to the progress for inbred lines of population 1, and σ A2A1 and D121 for inbred lines of population 2. σA1A2 and σA2A1are the covariances of the average effects in the interpopulation hybrid and in populations 1 and 2 respectively, and D112 and D121 are the covariances between the effects of homozygous dominance in populations 1 and 2 and the average gene effects in the interpopulation hybrid. D112 and D121 contributions for the inbreds came from populations P1 and P2 vary in function of the inbreeding of these inbreds, of the original populations and their genic frequencies (p̄ for population P1 and r̄ for population P2). These components are negatives for p̄ and r̄ < 0,5; zero for p̄ = r̄ = 0,5 and positives for p̄ and r̄ > 0,5. For p̄ > 0,5 and r̄ < 0,5, D112 will be positive and D121 negative, contributing positively and negatively for the expected progress in the inbreds derived from populations P1 and P2, respectively. In order to estimate the inbreeding depression alteration via intra and interpopulation selection some expressions were also obtained. At the intrapopulation level it was shown that only the component D1 contributed to alterate the inbreeding depression in the selection schemes with SO (half sib and full sib) progenies, and components D1 and D2 contribute for selection schemes with endogamic progenies S1 and S2. It was shown that inbreeding depression increases for populations with p̄ ≃ 0,3; it is insignificant for p̄ ≃ 0,5 and decreases for p̄ ≃ 0,7 for the considered characters (grain weight, plant height and ear height). At interpopulation level only D112 and D121 were shown to alterate the inbreeding depression in the populations. For p̄ > 0,5 and r̄ < 0,5 the inbreeding depression decreases in population 1 and increases in population 2 and for p̄ = r̄ = 0,5 the inbreeding depression does not alterate. The model used for those predictions is concerned to the condition of two alleles per locus, and the genetic load is not taken in account. On the other hand, literature data are according to those predictions.
