Comparison of selection methods in partially autogamous populations
Abstract in English
The genetic model proposed by COCKERHAM and WEIR (1984) applied to partially autogamous plants was studied. Under this model, which does not include epistatis and is limited to the populations in linkage equilibrium, the genotypic variance is divided into six components, if we admit any number of alleles per locus, or five, if we admit two alleles per locus. Four new methods for estimating the genotypic variance components were proposed. In addition, the properties of selection methods based on families were studied by comparing different methods through the simulation of 20 different situations. Results indicated that proposed methods for estimation of genetic variance components were inefficient. It could be shown that, ignoring the existance of the six components of variance and estimating progress from selection only on the basis of the genetic variance among a single kind of progenies, is very much inadequate, in most situations. The corresponding biases were quantified. The improvement of mixed self and random mating populations, based on selfed progenies with the recombination of remnant seed under the natural rate of self fertilization, was shown to be the most efficient. With this scheme the population will tend to a new equilibrium in which the average inbreeding coefficient is only slightly higher than the initial F value. Recombination through remnant seed of selfed progenies was always superior for any type of selection unit. Open pollinated (maternal) progenies as selection units ranked second in efficiency. In general, the traditional within family selection was less efficient than selection of individual plants within a bulk of remnant seed of selected families.
