Evaluation of populations with different levels of elite lines introgression for maize (Zea mays L.) breeding programs
Resumo em inglês
The potential performance of maize hybrids are determined from the performances of the populations, from where the inbred lines are derived, and their crosses. Usually, the source populations in hybrid breeding programs are developed from crosses of elite inbred lines, and from populations under recurrent selection programs. The objective of this research was to evaluate the introgression of elite lines into populations from the same heterotic group, aimed to develop source populations with greater genetic potential than the original populations for hybrid breeding programs. Genetic materials used in this research include two maize populations and two elite lines. The maize populations were IG-3 and IG-4 derived from the intercrossing of 8 and 10 elite lines from BR-105 and BR-106 maize populations, respectively. The elite inbreds lines were L-23-2B and L-14-4B, derived from BR-105 and BR-106 maize populations, respectively. BR-105 and BR-106 maize populations are from heterotic groups, and also, their derived populations and lines. Each populations was crossed and backcrossed to the elite line from the same heterotic group generating the following base populations: IG-3 100, IG-3 75, IG-3 50, IG-3 25, and IG-4 100, IG-4 75, IG-4 50 and IG-4 25 wherein the numbers from 100 to 25 represent the proportion of the germoplasm of original populations in the base populations. From each base population S2 lines were obtained and a mixture of these lines were used to represent the S2 lines from them; also, these mixture of S2 lines from each population was crossed to the elite line from the opposite heterotic group generating the topcrosses. The mixture of the S2 lines and their crosses from each population were evaluated in split-blocks following a randomized complete block design. The base populations were, also, crossed following a partial diallel design, wherein the populations from IG-3 group were crossed to the populations from IG-4 group. Those crosses were evaluated in experiments following a randomized complete block design. All experiments were evaluated in 9 environments, with 10 replications per environment. Results showed a tendency to reduce the grain yield in the lines from IG-3 group with the introgression of the line L-23-2B, although the population IG-3 25 (75% of the germplasm from the line) showed the highest grain yield. The same results were observed for the crosses from IG-3 group. In the IG-4 group, there was a tendency to increase grain yield of the lines as the proportion of the elite lines in the populations increased. The same results were, also, observed for the crosses, and the highest grain yield was observed for IG-4 25. The general combining ability (GCA) for grain yield for IG-3 populations increased as the proportions of the elite L-23-2B increased in the base population. The same trend was not observed for the IG-4, and the original population (IG-4 100) showed the highest GCA. For the specific combining ability the highest value was observed for the cross of the populations with the highest proportion of introgression of the lines, i.e., IG-3 25 x IG-4 25. There was no trend in reducing the phenotypic variances for grain yield with the introgression of the lines in both groups of populations for both the S2 lines and their crosses. The estimates of phenotypic variances of the original populations (IG-3 100 and IG-4 100) did not differ significantly from those populations with the highest proportion of introgression of lines (IG-3 25 and IG-4 25) for the S2 lines as well as for the crosses. These results suggest that the introgression of elite lines into populations can be used to developed new improved source populations, enhancing their genetic potential for developing inbred lines and hybrids.
