Plot size for progeny selection in maize (Zea mays L.)
Abstract in English
Six progeny trials were carried out in 1980 – 81, with 147 half-sib families from the maize population ESALQ PB-5, in order to study plot size and its consequences in recurrent selection programs. Progenies were evaluated in three 7 x 7 duplicate simple lattice experiments by using one row plots with 5 m2; at harvest, the whole plots were splitted into five-plots (sampling units) and data were collected from each sampling unit. At the same time, the same progenies were evaluated in there 7 x 7 duplicate simple lattice experiments, by using with 1 m2. The traits studied were : plant and ear height, ear number, ear diameter, total ear weight and total grain yield. Data were combined by using adjacent sampling units and then, the data analysis were performed by considering five plot sizes, besides those concerning the independent trials with 1 m2 plots. The results showed that the experiments with 1 m2 were less efficient for the discrimination among progenies, as compared with the experiments with 5 m5 plots, for yield traits. The combination of plot size and number of evaluated progenies indicated an optimum plot size between 3 and 4 m2, or 15 to 20 plants per plot, for grain yield. With such plot size the expected gain is maximized for the number of replications used in this study. On the other hand, taking constant the total area covered by each progeny in the experiment, the maximum gain from selection is attained by decreasing the plot size and increasing the number of replications. The influence of the plot size on the estimates of several statistical-genetic parameters, such as additive genetic variance, coefficient of heritability and genetic coefficient of variation, was shown, for all the studied traits. No practical limitation was observed, for setting up, carrying and collecting data in the experiments with plots 1 m2 large.
