Performance of onion cultivars (Allium cepa L.) in relation to alternative storing techniques of onions sets
Abstract in English
The production of onion at São Paulo State, can be carried out by transplanting, onion set and direct seeding crop systems. The experimental trials, onion set cultivation, by the alternative technique, storing under black plastic film in the field and conventional storing in store house, were carried out in the Vegetable Breeding Section, Department of Genetics of the ESALQ, São Paulo University, Piracicaba-SP, in Monte Alto-SP at the propriety of Mr. Fugita. The observed characters were: sprouting, rooting, survival, bulb average weight, and yield. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four replication. The result obtained in experiment allowed the following conclusions: - The black plastic film used in alternative storing technique showed good viability due the storage facility; - The dormancy of onion set had great difference among onion cultivars, but are influenced by environmental factors and storage manner; - The dormancy period decrease the onion set are storage in plastic film, can be planting early or sowing late; - The onion set that had dormancy showed low survival in the field; - The most promissing varieties in conventional storing were: Roxa Barreiro, IPA 3, Pira Ouro, Pira Lopes and Pirana, in alternative storing technique were: Pira Lopes(T), Pirana and Pira Ouro(T); - The varieties: Composto de Verão and População F3 (long day x short day) showed great potential to onion set crop systems.
