The circulant crossing scheme for the evoluation of inbred lines of maize (Zea mays L.) at the interpopulation level
Abstract in English
A new crossing scheme, based on a circulant factorial arrangement, was used for the evaluation of inbred lines derived from two maize populations, ESALQ-PB2 (dent type) and ESALQ-PB3 {flint type). Thus single cross hybrids (dent x flint; i. e., interpopulation level) were obtained in chain sequence so that each line was crossed with three lines of the opposite population in a circulant fashion. Cresses comprised 25 S6 lines from each population thus resulting 75 single cresses that were evaluated in completely randomized blocks with three replications at two locations. The following traits were studied: yield (ear weight in kg/plot), weight of five ears per plot, grain yield of five ears per plot, plant height, ear height, ear lenght and ear diameter. The preliminary analysis of variance was performed for each location and jointly and provided the following estimates: experimental coefficient of variation (CVe%), genetic coefficient of variation (CVg%), general mean (X̅), genetic variance among single crosses (σ2g), phenotypic variance among single cross means (σ2) and the coefficient of heritability (ĥ2). The single cross means (Y̅ij) were then analysed according of single crosses; Y̅ij = μ̂ + ĝi + ĝj + eij, where μ̂ is the mean of single crosses; ĝi and ĝj stand for general combining of ith̠ and jth̠ lines, respectively; and eij, is a deviation from the model, that includes the experimental error and sij, the specific combining ability effect. The estimates of parameters (μ̂, ĝi e ĝj) were obtained following the general least square procedure and the specific combining ability by difference ŝij = Y̅ij - μ̂ - ĝi - ĝj. Following the same procedure, the analysis of variance of the single cross means were performed for each location and jointly, for all the studied traits. The overall results indicated general combining ability (GCA) as the most important source of variation which showed, to be highly significant in most of the instances. On the other hand specific combining ability (SCA) also showed significance for most of the traits. Some traits showed significance for the interaction GCA x location and for SCA x location. The genetic potentials of the inbred lines were evaluated by their ĝi (or ĝj) estimates and in same instances for their performance in specific crosses. Also ĝi and ĝj were used to estimate the hybrid combinations (Y̅ij = μ̂ + ĝi + ĝj) and the coefficient of determination (R2) for observed predicted means was used to infer on the predictability of the reduced model. General results showed that the reduced model is fairly effective for predicting hybrid combinations and that the overall procedure as proposed herein may be usefull for the evaluation of the genetic potential of inbred lines in a hybrid breeding program.
