Correlations between traits at the adult stage and possibility of early selection in hybrids of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.)

Resumé en anglais
Twelve biclonal hybrids of cacao were used for their agronomic and genetic evaluation and for estimation of phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlation between combinations of ten traits; the correlations were further splitt on the basis of direct and indirect effects following the path analysis. In nine of the biclonal hybrids the agronomic potential was studied in the juvenile phase and the possibility of early selection was investigated by using multiple linear regression models. The evaluation at the adult phase was done at the ninth (23 harvests) and tenth years (18 harvests) after planting in two experiments established in contiguous areas, according to the completely randomized block design with seven replications and twelve plants per plot. At the juvenile phase the evaluation was done in the nursery at 93, 125, 156 and 186 days after sowing, following a completely randomized block design with split-plot in time with four replications and 36 plants per plot. The best agronomic performances were observed for hybrids POUND 7 x SIAL 505 and SCA 6 x ICS 1 with yielding potential over 2.700 kg/ha/year of dry cocoa, while in the juvenile phase hybrid SCA 6 x ICS 1 showed the highest mean for net assimilation rate. The genetic variability among hybrids and the genotypic coefficient of determination were sufficiently high to assure expressive gains from selection for the main yield components. A high and positive genotypic correlation was found between dry seed weight and number of normal (non-damaged) fruits per tree. Genetically, however, the increase in the number of fruits per plant leads to a decrease in the bean weight, in the weight of beans per fruit, fruit weight and conversion factor of the seed wet weight to dry weight. There are evidences that seed size can be increased without affecting the number of beans per fruit. General results led to conclude that the number of fruits per plant and dry weight of beans per fruit are the main components for the evaluation of yield potential in biclonal hybrids of cacao, while the number of seeds per fruit and bean weight are components of the weight of beans per fruit and are then secondary yield components. The net assimilation rate evaluated in the juvenile phase was sufficient to explain about 69.0% of the variation wet seed weight per plant in the adult phase, thereby showing the possibility of early selection in cacao. Nevertheless, the effect of other variables not included in this study may contribute to a lower accuracy in predicting yield of biclonal hybrids of cacao.
