Comparisons of testers for evaluation of the combining ability of inbred lines of maize (Zea mays L.)
Mots-clés en anglais

Resumé en anglais
This study showed a methodology for selecting testers in a corn hybrid breeding program, where the parental population is not used as the tester for practical reasons . The S6 lines from tw? maize composites were evaluated in cresses with four testers of narrow genetic base: two lines of low endogamy, developed from the parental populations (Ti and T2) and two single cresses from one double cross semident hybrid (T3 and T4). The difterence between the testers with respect to the genetic divergence, general combining ability and heterosis in cresses, were not infered from the genealogy and history of the combining ability ot the testers, but from lheir performance in a complete diallel cross between the four testers using the model of GRIFFING (1956) and the model of GARDNER & EBERHART (1966). The testers showed no differences with respec:t to general combining ability in the diallelel cross and in the top-cresses wiht lines of the CFPB and CDPB populations. The testers were different with respect to variety heterosis; the testers T3 and T4 presented the greater and the minor estimates of variety heterosis, respectively, and lhe testers T1 and T4 did not differ greatly. The lester T3, unrelated to the lines and selected for specific combining ability, presented the grealer variety heterosis and also the greater genetic variance of top-cresses with the two populations. It was not selected, because had high frequency of favorable alleles when compareci with lhe lines. The analysis of simple regression of EBERHART & RUSSELL (1966) and the analysis of multiple regression of SILVA & BARRETO (1985), were utilized, to assess on the differences in frequencies of favorable alleles between the lines anel the testes The ability of discrimination of the testers were evaluated using the criteria of porcentage of coincidence and index of divergence. It was confirmed that both c:riteria were complementary in selecting the tester that better classify the relative merit of the lines. The realated testers (T1 and T2) were selected for the general combining ability test because they better classified the relative merit of the lines and presenteei lower frequency of favorable alleles when compared with the testers, in relation to the frequency of favorable alleles of the lines of the two populations. The tester T3 was not selected for the specific combining ability test bec:ause their hybrids with the selected tester for general combining ability test were not different in the group of hibrids of diallel crossing. Based on the results of the study a methodology for testers and new populations in a hybrid maize breeding program is suggested.
