Abstract in English
Pyrenochaeta terrestris (Hansen) Gorenz, Walker and Larson, the causal fungus of pink-root disease in onion, occurs in production areas of this vegetable crop, in Brazil. This research aimed: to establish and characterize the host defense mechanism through symptomatological of onion reaction to P. terrestris; to indicate the likely resistance type envolved in the interaction onion x P. terrestris, according with VAN DER PLANK (1968) concepts; to evaluate the screening method efficiency of materials under greenhouse and field pink-root infested nursery; to indicate the most suitable screening to the brazilian conditions, for onion breeding program, and within the tested material to indicate the best resistence source to pink-root.The used material in the trials, were traditional national and foreign cultivars, introductions from other countries and populations in stage of breeding by “Setor de Melhoramento de Hortaliças, Departamento de Genética da Escola Superior de Agricultura “Luiz de Queiroz” da Universidade de São Paulo”. Trials carried out under greenhouse controlled condition and in infested pink-root field nursery, indicated two reaction expression of onion resistance to P. terrestris: the root infection index and the pathogen esporulation capacity on the host, showed through picnidium or picnidium like bodies. Evidences were obtained that cultivares capacities in showing germination and growth potential are host tolerance expression to the pathogen, under artificially infested soil. The absence of differential intaction cultivars x isolates in the complex onion x P. terrestris and others experimental evidencies indicated to be horizontal type the resistence envolved in this complex. The screening of material under greenhouse conditions in the juvenil stage, showed to be most eficiente when the evaluation criteria based on root infection index. The descrimination of resistance degree most efficient was by the root seedling inoculation with 106 conidia/ml suspension. The resistance evaluation of onion cultivars to P. terrestres, under pink-root infested nursery showed to be efficient. The most suitable time to proceed the evaluation was at the bulbing iniciation. The yield character, expressed in bulb weight yield, is highly associated to the resistance reaction under pink-root infested field nursery. Among the tested material, cultivars such as Barreiro and Cojumatlan groups, were the best onion source of resistance to P. terrestris.
