Enzyme variability in natural populations of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.)

Resumé en anglais
In order to infer on the genetic atructure and to quantify the genetic variability between two natural populations of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.) through isoenzymic characterization rubber tree seeds were collected in the State of Acre. Seeds were collected from 26 and 27 mother trees in the natural region of rubber trees within EMBRAPA's (UEPAE-Rio Branco) area and the sarne type of region in the Reserva Florestal do Catuaba, at km 14 and 22 on BR 364 highway, respectively. Electrophoretic analyses were carried out in starch gel with fresh leaflets extracts in the “B” leaf stage (dropping leaves, anthocyanin leaves, ranging 1.0cm to 2.0cm). Twenty plants from each mother tree on the average were analysed for 4 enzymatic loci (MDH-1, LAP-1, LAP-2, and SKDH). Variability parameters between and within populations, outcrossing rate, inbreeding coefficient, genetic divergence among populations, etc., were evaluated in the data analysis. The main conclusions were as follows: - The assessed variability parameters present high genetic variation levels for both rubber tree populations (HT = 0.3356) and are superior to other average tropical tree species; - . Estimated variability degree in both populations indicate that the largest part of the total variability is found within the populations (99.85%); - Parameters measuring the genetic distance between populations (I = 0.003, e2 = 0.0025, and DST = 0.0001) reveal that both populations are guite similar; - Estimates of the outcrossing rate of rubber tree in both studied populations (t̂ = 64,46% and 64,15% indicate a tendency of that species to belong to the intermediate group of plante concerning the mating system. Results indicate that, in this area, collection of rubber tree germplasm should be directed to the drawing of a larger number of individuals from a single population within each region.
