Genetic analysis of the induced variation in quantitative characters of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] through gamma radiation

Abstract in English
A genetic analysis was made in order to study the effect of gamma rays in inducing variability on quantitative characters of cowpea cultivar BR 1-Poty. The experiments were planted in Goianira, GO, Brazil, situated at 49° 13’ W of longitude, 16° 50’ S of latitude and 800 meters of altitude, in a Red-Yellow Latossol. The following characters were evaluated: days to first flower (FI), number of pods per plant (NVP) pod lenght (CMV), number of seeds per pod (NSV), 100-seed weight (PCS), seed yield per plant (PSP) and seed yield per plant estimated by yield components (PSPE). The resistance of irradiated populations to cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CpAMV) was also evaluated. The seeds of the cultivar BR 1-Poty were irradiated with cobalt 60 at doses of 15 and 25 kR -gamma rays. The M2 plants and their M3 progenies were evaluated and compared to a nonirradiated cultivar (dose 0 kR). Both material were planted in randomized complete block designs and evaluated on an individual-plant basis during 1985 and 1986. The following genetic-statistical parameters were estimated: means, variances, covariances, coefficients of correlation between characters and between generations, offspring-parent regressions, coefficients of skewness and kurtosis, coefficients of heritability (narrow and broad-sense), genetic components and genetic advance through selection. The results indicated that the methodology of associating individual T1 and M2 plants with their respective T2 and M3 progenies was efficient in estimating genetic parameters, even for those characters on wich the original cultivar BR i-Poty did not perform as pure line. The resistance of cultivar BR 1-Poty to the cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CpAMV) was not altered by gamma radiation. The amount of induced mutation was enough to increase the genetic variability of quantitative characters, such as, number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant and pod length. The effect of the gamma radiation was negative on 100-seed weight reducing the mean, variance and heritability of the character. Consequently, the expected genetic gain in 100-seed weight was superior with selection applied on the original cultivar BR 1-Poty than to the irradiated population.
