Early evaluation of primary clones of rubber tree (Hevea spp) in Belém, state of Para, Brazil
Abstract in English
The objective of this research was to study the performance of 16 rubber primary clones under the ecological conditions of Belém, state of Pará, Brazil. In addition, it was observed the confidence of the selection practiced among clones of age of two years old. The mother trees that originated the clones were pre-selected in Açailândia (Maranhão State) and the experiment was established in 1982 in the experimental field at Belem, under the EMBRAPA/FCAP agreement. A randomized complete block design with 18 treatments and 3 replications was used. The treatments utilized were the following clones: PFA 70, PFA 83, PFA 91, PFA 95, PFA 164, PFA 467, PFA 509, PFA 518, PFA 532, PFA 599, PFA 617, PFA 622, PFA 715, PFA 737, PFA 768, PFA 783. The clones IAN 717 and IAN 3087 were used as checks. Data were collected in trees at first and second years of age. Fourteen characteristics were evaluated at the first year, and eighteen at the second one, comprising yield of dry rubber, some characteristics related to vigor and laticiferous system, foliar characteristics and disease resistance. Rubber yield was evaluated by the Mendes? early test (MTP) and- modified HAMAKER-MORRIS-MANN early test (HMM-m) in the first and second year, respectively. Due to the occurrence of missing plants within experimental plots, probably as a result of scion-root stock incompatibility, data adjustment for each character and year, individually, was performed through, the use of covariance. For those characters evaluated in the two years, a covariance analysis in randomized complete blocks, split-plot in time was performed. The clones PFA 622, PFA 715, PFA 617 and PFA 599, showed to be most productive in the first year, whereas IAN 717, PFA 768, IAN 3087 and PFA 617, had the best performance in the second year. Similarly to yield, it was observed large variations in the clones in the two years of study concern to the majority of the evaluated characters. As a consequence, the interaction clones x year was highly significative. Correlation studies between clones arid mother trees for yield, revealed that selection at early stages was ineffective, suggesting that evaluation should be performed in latter stages of tree development. Such evidences are reinforced from the observation, that, for all characters under study, genotypic determination coefficients increased from the first to the second year of age. Such increments were consequences of the larger genetic variability in the second year, which is believed to be maintained later on. It was observed a close association between yield of the 3 cycles of MTP and between the 2 cycles of HMM-m. However, only in the second test it was observed significative correlation between yield and the other studied characters. Concerned to the foliar diseases incidence, it was observed that the clones, in general, were highly infected by Thanatephorus cucumeris and Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes. However, the foliar disease that caused most damage to yield performance of the productive clones was the South American Leaf Blight (SALB) caused by the fungus Microcyclus ulei. This fact is a partially explanation for the lack of significative correlation of yield of early tests and yield of the mother trees, since it was repotted the absence of the fungus in the environments where mother trees have been grown. Were selection conducted in 2 year-old clones, the selection index methodology would not be more efficient than phenotypic selection, considering only yield. The allocation of increasing weights for yield in building indices, would not modify the observed results.
