Determination of photosynthetic rate in maize (Zea mays L.) varieties and hybrids
Abstract in English
Plant breeding have contributed with substantial importance to increase the productivity of the main crops, Crop physiology studies show that plants can utilize about 1% of the total photosyntheticaly active radiation, Maúy researchers suggest that selection of more efficient plants in convertion of solar energy at the levels of 3 to 5%, is the main way to achieve better yields, However, the data of literatura are very contradictory concerning the relationships between photosynthesis and yield. The objetive of this work aimed to evaluate the selection effect to increase maize yield in relation to photosynthesis. To carry out this research, it was built an apparatus to measure photosynthesis based on the work of PEARCE et alii (1976) which use an Infra-red gas analyser with a team of plexiglass chambers, Twenty varieties were evaluated from less improved and indigenous varieties until improved varieties and commercial hybrids. The measurements were clone in the 3rd leaf from the tassel and ear leaf, for each plant. The results show estatistically significant differences at the level of varieties, discerning basically two groups. The recent varieties and hybrids had a higher photosynthetic rate than less improved varieties, showing a close relation between yield and photosynthesis.
