Evaluation of intra and interpopulation variability for aluminum tolerance in leucaena [Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit]
Abstract in English
This work was carried out in the greenhouse of the Ecological Genetics Laboratory of the Department of Genetics, ESALQ/USP, Piracicaba, SP, to evaluate intra and inter-population genetic variability for aluminum tolerance in Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit, and at establishing a criterion for the screening of leucaena populations for Al tolerance. Inter-population variability for Al tolerance was evaluated in 29 populations under 5 different Al concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 ppm Al) over 2 experiments. The traits used for the classification of differential tolerance to Al were: length of the aerial portion (Y1), length of the longest root (Y2), dry weight of the aerial portion (Y3), dry weight of roots (Y4), length of the first leaf (Y5), number of lateral branches (Y6), dry weight of the aerial portion/dry weight of roots ratio (Y7) and cotyledon persistance (Y8). After standardization of Y1 through Y7 for all five Al concentrations, a cluster (multivariate) analysis was performed, grouping the populations according to their similarity with the aid of JOHNSON'S (1967) algorithm, performed by the CLUSTER procedure of the SAS (S.A.S. Institute Inc., 1979) package. The cluster analysis indicated the presence of two contrasting groups relatively to the traits under study. The group of tolerant introductions comprised populations T-1, T-2, T-3, T-6, T-7, T-13, T-14, T-15, T-17, T-19, T-20, T-21 and T-30, whereas the group of intoIerant introductions comprised T-4, T-5, T-8, T-9, T-10, T-11, T-12, T-16, T-18, T-22, T-23, T-24, T-25, T-26, T-28 and T-29. A study was made on which of the univariate traits (Y1 through Y8) yielded the most similar classification to that yielded by the cluster analysis. It was observed that the best agreement among the criteria was for traits Y1, Y2, Y3, Y4 and Y8 at the Al concentrations of 6, 9 and 12 ppm. Progenies obtained from 18 individual leucaena plants, chosen from three Al-tolerant populations, were tested under 9 ppm Al to evaluate the existence of genetic variability between and within progenies. Only the traits Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4 were considered. Genetic variability was present both between progenies and within some progenies. In spite of the classifications of Al tolerance yieIded by Y1 through Y4 being similar to that yielded by the cluster analysis, the mutual correspondence among those traits was not quite satisfactory. This stresses the difficulty in assigning one single particular trait for the evaluation of Al tolerance in leucaena.
