Partial diallel between resistant and susceptible soybean parents to insects
Resumé en anglais
This research program belongs to the Genetics Department of ESALQ of the University of São Paulo. It aims to verify the possibility to joint favorable allele for resistance to insects and to high seed yield in the same genotype. It was utilized exotic and resistant parents such as the Crockett cultivar, with resistance derived from PI 171451; Lamar, with resistance derived from PI 229358; the experimental line D72-9601-1, with resistance derived from PI 229358; and also the adapted parent IAC-100, with resistance derived from PI 229358 and from PI 274454. The cultivars BR-6 (Nova Bragg), IAS-5, Davis and OCEPAR-4 (Iguaçu) were utilized as susceptible and adapted parents. Partial diallel crossing were carried out between the resistant and susceptible genotypes, totalizing 16 biparental combinations. The F2 generation was evaluated in three experiments, each one with one main objective. The seed yield was evaluated in Piracicaba city in São Paulo State - SP (at the experimental area of Genetics Department of ESALQ of the University of São Paulo); the reaction to sucker insects was evaluated in Mococa city - SP (Experimental Station at the Agronomic Institute of Campinas - IAC) and in Campinas city - SP (at the Experimental Center of IAC) was evaluated the reaction to chewer insects. The randomized complete block design was utilized, with six replications to evaluate the F2 generation of 16 crosses and eight parents, totalizing 24 entries. The experimental plot was constituted of 12 hills of individual plants spaced 0,5 x 0,6 m, where 6 to 12 seeds were used. The SHDT (Single Hill Descent Thinned) method was utilized to let only one plant in a hill. The evaluated characters in the experiment in Piracicaba were: time to flowering (NDF), plant height at flowering (APF), time to maturity (NDM), plant height at maturity (APM), lodging (Ac), reproductive period (PR), pod filling period (PEG), foliar retention percentage (PRF), agronomic value (VA), one hundred seed weight (PCS) and seed yield (PG); in Mococa, besides of the APM, PRF and PG characters, previously described, the stained seeds (PSM) were also evaluated; in Campinas besides of NDM, APM, Ac, VA, PRF and PG characters already described, the cutted foliar area to chewer insects (AFC) were also evaluated. The statistic-genetic analyses were made to each experiment including: individual plant analyses (with means estimation, amplitude, variances between plants and heterosis); mean plot analyses (variance and covariance analyses, grouping for the Scott-Knott test, correlations between characters, broad sense heritability at mean plot level); line x tester genetic analyses (general and specific combining ability and their effects). The following conclusions can be taken from this research: (a) the IAC-100 parent and its progenies have superior performance to the majority of characters evaluated on three environments; (b) the exotic parent Lamar presents only the earliness as a desirable character, per se as much as its progenies, in summer and fall/winter cultivation; (c) between exotic parents, the Crockett presents the better adaptation for Brazilians conditions, if cultivated in summer (sowing in November); (d) the foliar retention can be resulted from the stink bugs attack and from the fall/winter cultivation; (e) the fall/winter cultivation promotes a reduction of seed yield, because it reduces the maturity cycle, and the plant height and vigor. It also permitted the identification of genes for long juvenile period in IAC-100; (f) agronomic value can be used to direct selection for resistance to insects and seed yield; (g) general combining ability and additive genetic effects represent the principal cause of variation on the evaluated characters and (h) the IAC-100 parental presents the best general combining ability involving the resistance to insects and seed yield, becoming an important source of genes for these characters; Davis x IAC-100 cross was the most promising in terms of specific combining ability for these characters.
