Efficiency of the polycross technique for genic recombination and estimation of genetic parameters in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz)
Abstract in English
This dissertation evaluated the efficiency of the polycross technique in promoting genic recombination, and estimated genetic parameters for plant height, plant diameter, number of roots, root yield, and harvest index in cassava. The experiment was carried out in Anhembi Experimental Station, College of Agriculture "Luiz de Queiroz", University of State of São Paulo, located in Piracicaba City, São Paulo, Brazil. This experimental station is located at 22° 48' south latitude, 48° 07' west longitude, and 469 meters of altitude. The sandy soil has low fertility, high level of acidity and toxic aluminum, similar to the soils called "cerrado" in Brazil. Material included six high yielding cultivars and three selected experimental population as parents, and eight of their corresponding polycrossed progenies. It was utilized randomized complete block design with 10 replications of the 17 genotpypes. All five characters were evaluated when the plants completed 8 months from planting date. The following results were discussed: - The efficiency of the polycross technique was indicated by reductions of the among progenies variances and by increases of the within progenies variances; - The efficiency of polycross technique was utilized as argument in favor of predominance of cross-pollination in cassava; - Plant height and harvest index showed large values of genotypic determination and heritability coefficients, based on performance of the parents and polycrossed progenies, respectively; - Plant diameter, root yield, and number of roots exhibited: small values of genotypic determination coefficients, based on parents performance and, very small values of heritability coefficients, based on polycrossed progenies performance; - Plant height and diameter were the characters showing evidence of dominance variance, with indications of parcial dominance and overdominance for plant height and plant diameter, respectively; - There were some genotypes exhibiting high root yield, besides vigor for plant height and diameter, resulting in harvest indices close to 0.60, the limit for ideal score; - The yieldest plants from each polycrossed progeny had root yield varying from 21.5 to 35.7 t/ha. These high yield values indicated the existence of adapted genotypes to acid soils with low fertility, and promissing genotypes for further selection programs; - The "SRT 1099-Taquari" genotype distinguished itself by root yield "per se" and by transfering the yield capacity to its corresponding polycrossed progeny; - The hypothesis of existence of high level of heterozygosity in commercial cultivars of cassava was supplanted by the hypothesis of epistatic genic combinations.
