Evaluation of the combining ability of S2 and S5 maize (Zea mays L.) progenies from Esalq VD-2 composite
Abstract in English
One thousand S2 progenies from ESALQ VD-2, a yellow Tuxpeño type maize, obtained after selfing and selection both among and within progenies were evaluated in top-crosses to ESALQ VF-1 composite, an orange flint material mainly of Colombian and Cuban germplasm. The top-crosses were evaluated in 10 x 10 simple lattice design with two replications in 1976/77. From each yield trial selected the ten superior top-crosses, amounting too ne hundred top-crosses. By using remnant seed from the superior one hundred S2 inbred lines, thoses progenies were planted and the best plants from the best lines were selfed up to the S5 generation. In 1981/82 sixty four S5 inbred lines were top-crossed to the ESALQ VF-1 Composite, and the top-crosses were evaluated in a 8 x 8 triple lattice design with three replications. Both ESALQ VD-2 and ESALQ VF-1 were included as checks in all yield trials in order to obtain proper comparisions between the S2 and S5 materials. The results indicated that by selecting the best S2 progenies regarding combining ability, it was possible to advance the inbreeding adding furthermore favorable genetic characters. Therefore, the evaluation and selection of inbred lines at the S2 generation, showed to be an efficient procedure to obtain later on high combining S5 inbred lines.
