Varietal performance of short-day onion (Allium cepa L.) related to bulb dormancy
Abstract in English
The dormancy of bulb is one the important characters related to onion keeping capacity and must be considered in breeding programmes. ln general, onion varieties in commercial use in Brazil have poor bulb conservation. In experimental trials, carried out in the Department of Genetics of the ESALQ, University of São Paulo, Piracicaba-SP, was studied the performance of short-day onion varieties related to the bulb dormancy, · through of the use of different technics. The experimental data were obtained for the following characters: rooting, sprouting and keeping capacity. It were utilized twenty five onion varieties and cv. Baia Periforme was utilized as control. It were utilized the entirely randomized design with two repetition in all the experiments. The results obtained in experiments al1owed the foiiowing conclusions: a) The short-day varieties onion that had greater dormancy of bulb were: Baia Periforme, Baia Triunfo SMJ-II, Creola and Creola Catarinense. Cojumatlan L. 2691, Roxa Chata SMP-IV, Texas Grano, Ciganinha, Excel Bermudas 986 and Pira Tropical A/C varieties have low bulb dormancy; b) The rooting is highly correlated with sprouting when the conditions of humidity are favorable and maxim, however there was no correlation with the keeping capacity. On the other hand, sprouting is associate with the keeping capacity; e) Selection in onion breeding for high ou low bulb dormancy will be made by planting the bulbs in the soil or with the basal part irrmerse in water, taking as patterns the varieties such as Cojumatlan L. 2691 and Roxa Chata SMP-IV. and Baia Triunfo SMJ-II and Creola Catarinense, respectively, as low and high bulb dormancy.
