Abstract in Portuguese
Sw., S. scabra Vog. e S. viscosa Sw.
Title in English
Comparative ecogenetics among three species of Stylosanthes occurring in the State of São Paulo: S. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw., S. scabra Vog. e S. viscosa Sw.
Abstract in English
Ecogenetical aspects related to three species of the genus Stylosanthes (Leguminosae - Papilionoideae): S. guianensis (Aubl.) Sw., S. scabra Vog. and S. viscosa Sw.), were studied. Those three species occur in the State of São Paulo, as colonizing plants in pastures showing different levels of alterations. Spacial distribution and type of association among the three species were determined in ten different areas located in the following countries of the São Paulo State: Piracicaba, São Pedro, Americana, and Charqueada. From the ten areas, five corresponded to pasture with grazing animals and five without. In these areas the frequency and density of the three Stylosanthes species were also determined. In order to relate the characteristics of the areas under study with the occurrence of the three Stylosanthes species, the edafic and climatic classification of the ten areas were done. The distribution of the three species in the State of São Paulo was obtained through the literature and also the collected material for the present study. The variability related to seed dormancy was evaluated both among the Stylosanthes species as well as among families within species. For this purpose, germination tests were carried out using seeds collected in the areas where the three species were obtained. The results of the present study permitted to draw the following conclusions: a) Populations of the three species of Stylosanthes in nature have a tendency to show a spatial distribution of colony type; b) Even though the three Stylosanthes species occur practically in all areas studied, it is only rarely found association among them. This mean that there is a tendency of mutual exclusion among the species; c) In relation to seed dormancy, there is both inter as well as intraspecific variability. This variability appears to be due to the interaction of genetic and environmental components; d) In areas without animal pressure, S. guianensis tends to be the species most frequent and also of higher density, while in pastures with grazing animals the same is true for S. scabra. This suggests that S. scabra has greater adaptation to pasture environment, being this adaptation the result of natural selection.
