Abstract in English
The chromosome counting of the autotetraploid corn microsporocites was carried out in 71 plants in a total amount of 1,420 cells in the late diacinese phase, The result showed that 60.56% of the studied cells had 40 chromosomes" it was shown that the chromosome number varied from 36 to 42 per cell. In most of the observed microsporocites predominated the paring in the forrn of bivalents and tetravalents, saldam appearing univalents, Trivalents were not found. Straggling chromosomes in the anaphase I demonstrated the existance of univalent ones. These observation showed that there is an irregular chromosome distribution in the autotetraploid corn meiosis for the daughter cells. From the total of observed cells, 64.85% of the chromosomes were associated, forming tetravalents, 34.51% forming bivalents and 0.64% forming univalents. It was observed that nearly 2/3 of the autotetraploid corn chromosomes were associated, forming tetravalents in the microsporocites, the bivalents being nearly the remaining 1/3 of the meiotic chromosomic paring of this material. The ring shaping or chain shaping were often observed in autotetraploid corn meiosis studied, but other shapes were observed as well. The greater frequency of ring-shaping with alternated segregation in the anaphase observed in the autotetraploid corn, explains the average of 60% euploids with 40 chrornosomes carried out in several researches by many authors. In the pachytene only one nucleolus was observed while in the diads were often found two nucleolus in each nucleus, in- dicating the presence of two chromosomes 6 of corn. Also were observed tetrades having two binucleolated cells and two uninucleolated cells which probably carne from an aneuploid microsporocit where one chromosomic 6 was missing. The fact that two nucleolus were never observed in the pachytene leads us to think are joined in the phase. The 24 autotetraploid corn families studied showed plants with a relatively vigorous development, but with medium height of 1.18 m, considered as of short size. The average height of the first ear was 0,52 m. The average number of leaves per plant was 9.27. The ears were also of small size, being the self-fertilizing, sibs and the free polinization, yielded in average 105, 116 and 137 viable seeds per ear respectively. In these autotetraploid ears inviable grains were observed, originated from aneoploid sterile gametes, the amount of viable seeds per ear attained the maximum number of 321. The decreased fertility observed in the studied autotetraploid corn colony in this work and also observed by various researches is the inevitable consequence of the irregular segregation of the chromosomes in anaphase I, which forms unbalanced gametas producing consequently the polen abortion. The diploidization induction, ar the 20 bivalent production from the autotetraploid material through irradiation. is an open field for research with new perspectives for the use of autotetraploid corn in improvement programs.
