Estimation of components of variance and coeficient of genotypic determination of grain yield in coffee (Coffea arabica L.)
Abstract in English
The present study was conducted with the objective of estimating the components of variance and a coefficient comparable to heritability of yield in coffee, a perennial crop which under Brazilian condition presents biennial oscillation in yield. The green coffee yield data obtained from 1954 up to 1959 of an experiment with 100 progenies of several cultivars of C. arabica L. carried out in Campinas - SP, by "Instituto Agronômico de São Paulo" were used. The data were grouped in annual, biennial and triennial harvests and were analysed in different groupings as split-plot in time. The biennial and triennial analyses was made starting from the decomposition of the annual analysis. In order to simplify the analytical method, comparative analyses were made as split-plot in time based on biennial and triennial averages of the plots. Components of variance were estimated for these types of analyses. The coefficients of genotypical determination (bp) similar to heritability, were estimated for annual and simplified biennial and triennial analyses. By means of the bp coefficients an attempt was made to evaluate the residual genotipic variability of the cultivars and the number of harvests necessary for judging the progeny values. From the results obtained the following conclusions could be obtained: 1 - The analysis of variance, as split-plot in time is adequate for estimating the components of variance for grain yield in coffee, a perennial crop in which the sucessive annual harvests are obtained from the same plant; 2 - Under Brazilian coffee growing condition where biennial oscillation of grain yield of coffee occurs, it was evident that the data should be grouped in biennial harvests. This reduces the variance due to harvests and as a result, also eliminates the variance due to interaction among progenies and harvests. On the other hand, this grouping liberates more of the genetic variability present among the progenies tested; 3 - A scheme of analysis and decomposition of variance which can be utilised by breeders is a simplified analysis based on biennial mean of the plots. This method showed to be advantageous since has the same precision and is much simpler. Besides this analysis permits the estimation of parameters important for the plant breeder such as the componentes of variance and the coefficient of heritability or the coefficient of genotipic determination of the character; 4 - The coefficients of genotipic determination (bp) among progenies indicated that the simplified biennial analysis liberates more genetic variability (60,4%) than the annual analysis. On the other hand, the simplified triennial analysis exhibited less genetic variance (-21,7%) than the annual analysis; 5 - Through the bp coefficient, for quantifying the variability present among progenies of the cultivars, the results obtained are in agreement with the expected variability due to the origin and nature of the cultivars; 6 - By means of the bp coefficient the classification of cultivars was possible for the available genetic variance among progenies, emphasising Bourbon Vermelho as a more variable cultivar and subsequently Bourbon Amarelo, Caturra, Mundo Novo and Arábica, the last one showing no detectable genetic variation; 7 - By means of the simplified biennial analysis, the breeder can decide about the number of biennials to be used as a basis for the judgement of the progeny values, before selection. In the present case, three biennial harvests was the number judged convenient for all progenies of all the cultivars. Thus, for the cultivars with less genetic variabilities would be necessary more biennials and for the cultivars with more genetic variabilities, less biennials.
