Title in English
Estimates of Genetic parameters in two sub-populations of the variety of maize (Zea mays L.) Piranão
Abstract in English
Two sub-populations obtained from a brachytic population called Piranão M-III-HSI (three cycles of mass selection and one cycle of selection among and within half-sibs) were used. These were respectively Piranão A, obtained through the combination of 181 halfsib families of medium plant height, and Piranão B formed through the combination of 174 half-sib families of shorter plant height. Grain yield, plant and ear height had higher values for Piranão A in relation to Piranão B. The coefficients of heritability in the narrow sense for grain yield were 14.2% and 29.0% respectively for Piranão A and for Piranão B. For plant height these estimates were too high, above 100%. The estimates of additive genetic variances for those characters were similar to the usually found in the literatura for corn of normal plant height. On the other hand the components σ2d and σ2e were much lower. The additive genetic correlation between grain yield and plant height or ear height were of the order of 0.40 for Piranão A and 0.30 for Piranão B. Between plant height and ear height these correlations were of the arder of 0.70 for the two sub-populations. There are enough variation for improvement of grain yield using simple selection techniques. Also there is indication that selection for grain yield will result in an increase in plant and ear height in the two sub-populations, and specially for Piranão
