Progenies performance of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in different planting seasons
Abstract in English
Lettuce is unique among the major vegetables in its nearly exclusive use as a fresh, raw product. It features serious problems of early bolting as a summer crop in tropical regions. Several quality traits must be maintained and considered in breeding programmes. Thereby, experimental data were obtained for the following characters, commercially important: plant type; increased plant size; bolting, allied to type, colour and texture of leaf. The research consisted of trials in randomized complete block design, in four planting seasons: September/83, November/83, January/84 and April/84, over two locations: Piracicaba/SP and Moji-das-Cruzes/SP, where 21 cultivars and 55 progenies were tested. The slow bolting trait was evaluated in Piracicaba only. The experimental results allowed the following conclusions: - The best planting schedule in the summer crop in Piracicaba was the season 1 (September/84) that allowed for slow bolting of cultivars and progenies. On the other hand, selection for slow bolting resistance was best in season 3 (January/84) that provided for a better discrimination among the accessions because of the high temperatures in this season; - The most promissing progenies, which stood out for all characters, were: 22, 45, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 54, 57, 58, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 67, 68, 69, and 70. Progeny 31 was the most sensitive to early bolting during the three first trials. In the fourth season it showed to be an excellent material for the winter crop in both locations, summing up all the commercially desired qualities.
