Title in English
The utilization of the SSD breeding method in three segregating populations of rice (Oryza sativa L.)
Abstract in English
The objective of this work is to compare the relative efficiency of the SSD plant selection method with the pedigree method, in populations of rice. The genetic coefficient of variation (CVg) was used for the comparison. In the SSD method, three segregating populations (Perola x IR442-50; Perola x IR22; Perola x CICA 4) were utilized. Each one of the three crosses was conducted starting from previously F2 selected plants, sampling at least one seed of each plant in successive generations in greenhouse until high homozygosis (F6) was reached. Forty-five lines were, thus, obtained. The lines were then evaluated in a trial without repetition and control between lines. The genetic coefficient of variation (CVg) between all lines and between lines, within each cross, was also computed. Regarding the pedigree method, the study computed coefficients of variation of 91 lines from seven crosses in a trial with six repetitions in randomized blocks design, conducted in Londrina-PR, in the 1980/81 agricultural year. For the SSD method, the CVg for the three crosses was 79.89% and the CVg between lines, within each cross, were 72.44%, 83.04% and 78.09%. For the pedigree method, the following CVg were obtained: between all lines, 13.52%, between crosses, 10.24%, and between lines, within crosses 8.83. The analysis of the results to the following conclusions: a. the CVg for the SSD method (79.89%) was higher than the one obtained for the pedigree method (13.32%); b. the SSD method was “efficient” in the sense that it led to productive and agronomically superior genotypes as compared to the (superior) parent - the Perola variety; c. the SSD method is well fitted to a breeding for unpland rice. Its importance as a breeding method will undoubtedly increase as forthcoming superior varieties become available.
