Microbial biomass and its activity in a no-tillage chronosequence
Resumé en anglais
The effects of long-term applying no-tillage system [NT] on soil microbial biomass [BM] and its activity were evaluated in 1997, in a Latosol soil, Tibagi, Paraná State, Brazil. The studied area comprise a chronosequence of: 1) an area covered with the native vegetation [NV], 2) an area cultivated for 1 year under conventional tillage over the native vegetation [CT], 3) an area cultivated since 1989 under NT [NT10], and 4) an area cultivated since 1979 under NT [NT20]. Total-C, total-N and ammonium-N were greater under CT, probably due to the decomposition of the native vegetation after tillage. Total-C under NT20 was similar to total-C under NV, suggesting that long-duration NT restores the original levei of C of soil. Microbial biomass-C [MBC] decreased in the chronosequence, mainly in the superficial layers in the order of 36 and 57% in the 0-2,5 cm layer and 49 and 56% in the 2,5-5,0 cm 2,5-5,0 cm layer for PD10 and PD20, respectively. The Microbial biomass-N [MBN] of 0-2.5 cm layer under NV, NTl0, and NT20 did not show differences, but MBN of the other layers under NT10 and NT20 were lower than MBN under NV and CT. The Cmic:Nmic, ratio of the 0-2,5 cm layer decreased in the chronossequence from 4,30 in VN to 2,03 in PD20. The NT20 showed a more accentuated increase ofthis ratio in the lower the depths than the other treatments. The metabolic quotient [qCO2] and basal respiration in 0-2.5 cm layer increased in the chronosequence in up to 507% and 240% respectively in the 0-2,5 cm layer. The Cmic:Ctotal, ratio, Nmic:Ntotal ratio and Csoil:Nsoil decreased in the chronossequence and the lower Nmic:Ntotal rate was observed under NT20. The Cmic:Nmic rate in the 0-2.5 cm layer decreased in the chronosequence. Toe fungal and bacterial population, the microorganisms responsible for the ammonification, as well as the ammonium-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing microorganisms did not show quantitative changes in the long-term applying the NT. The ammonium-oxidizing, nitrite-oxidizing and fungi populations revealed quantitative changes due to the beginning of exploitation. Root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and nodulation increased in the long-term applying the NT. Com and soybean root colonization increased from 18% and 22% on VN to 66% and 55% on NT20, respectively. It seems apparent that the duration of application of the no-tillage system affected microbial biomass and its activity. Decrease of BMC as well as a lower Cmic:Nmic ratio are strong indicative of possible changes in the composition of the BM. However, it was not possible to observe the effect of NT on the bacterial and fungi population, N-organic-oxidizing, ammonium-oxidizing and nitrite-oxidizing microorganism with the applied techniques. The NT favors the colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi with the elapsing of the time of application of the system.
